Abstract

This study is aimed in providing the list of plants and its usage in olden days. The history of plants is closely related with the history of medicine since time immemorial. Various literature evidence shows the usage of medicinal plants and hence it leads to the various system of medicine like Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, which has its practice more than 5000 years ago. It shows that the people at that period had detailed knowledge about plants. Here it is attempted to collect the data from first five volumes of Epigraphia indica, which was published, by Archeological survey of India from 1882 to 1977. This study gives the brief outlook of various plants, its usage in various ways, in different time period, which helps us to drive the valuable bio-medical information just waiting to be uncoverd by the modern scientific methods. Further the detailed list of plants in historical period will be sorted out in evaluating the total volumes of Epigraphia indica.
