Abstract

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) leads to electrophysiological changes that predispose to ventricular arrhythmias. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the rhythm disturbances and their association with baseline electrolyte abnormalities in AMI patients at a tertiary care centre. Arrhythmias occurred in a substantial proportion of patients, with sinus tachycardia, ventricular premature complexes and ventricular tachycardia being the most frequent. Significant associations were observed between arrhythmias and electrolyte abnormalities, particularly elevated magnesium (p = 0.028) and chloride imbalance (p = 0.040). Thus, data shows the electrolyte–arrhythmia interactions in AMI, supporting early identification and targeted correction to improve patient outcomes.
