Abstract

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common urological conditions affecting aging males and is frequently associated with lower urinary tract symptoms that significantly impair quality of life. In recent years, increasing evidence has suggested a possible relationship between metabolic syndrome and the development and progression of BPH; however, the exact nature of this association remains unclear and requires further evaluation. This observational study of 112 BPH patients at a tertiary care center assessed the relationship between metabolic syndrome and prostate size, symptom severity and treatment outcomes over 18 months. Metabolic syndrome was present in 44.6% of patients and was associated with greater age, higher annual prostate growth rate, elevated HbA1c and severe AUA symptom scores. Thus, data shows the metabolic factors may contribute to BPH progression and that early detection and control of metabolic syndrome could help slow disease advancement.
