Abstract |
Hypomagnesemia is increasingly recognized as a significant yet underappreciated comorbidity in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), with emerging evidence suggesting its role in impaired insulin signaling and worsening glycemic outcomes. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate the correlation between serum magnesium levels and markers of glycemic control including glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose (FBG) and postprandial blood glucose (PPBG) in 120 T2DM patients. Serum magnesium levels were significantly lower in patients with poor glycemic control and a strong inverse correlation was observed between serum magnesium and HbA1c (r = −0.68, p<0.001). The overall prevalence of hypomagnesemia was 45%, with rates rising progressively across worsening glycemic categories. Thus, data shows the clinical importance of monitoring serum magnesium as part of routine diabetic management to potentially improve long-term glycemic outcomes. |
