Abstract |
The left atrial appendage is clinically important because its variable anatomy, irregular lumen, lobulations and narrow ostium can promote blood stasis and thromboembolism. Therefore, it is of interest to assess the 25 formalin-fixed adult human hearts to record LAA morphology and morphometry using vernier calipers, measuring thread and direct dissection. The mean LAA length was 3.7 ± 1.4 cm and mean maximum width was 1.4 ± 0.5 cm, with irregular S-shaped morphology being most common. Inferiorly directed apex, crenation, pouches and notches were frequently observed and specimens with two or more pouches had significantly greater width than single-pouch specimens. Thus, data shows the anatomical variability of the LAA and may aid anatomical teaching, imaging interpretation and planning of LAA-related thromboembolic prevention procedures.
