Abstract

Changes in thyroid hormones in people with severe disease conditions are a frequent occurrence. A person's organ function or rate of failure can be tracked and determined using their Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the individual and combined efficacy of TFT, routine biochemical indicators and SOFA scores in predicting mortality in a sample of 150 patients hospitalized to the intensive care unit (ICU) within 48 hours of admission. This cohort had a 41.3% overall mortality rate, qSOFA score strongly correlated with mortality. Mortality rates gradually climbed with higher scores 3.4% for score 1, 57.1% for score 2 and 94.7% for score 3 (p<0.001). Thus, data shows the thyroid function tests may be a straightforward and useful supplement for early prognostication and risk stratification in the intensive care unit (ICU) when combined with qSOFA.
