Abstract

Dentinal hypersensitivity is a frequent clinical problem in periodontal maintenance patients with gingival recession and exposed root dentin. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the efficacy of 980-nm diode laser and iontophoresis using stannous fluoride gel in 180 hypersensitive teeth from 30 systemically healthy periodontal maintenance patients. Teeth were randomly allocated to diode laser; iontophoresis with stannous fluoride gel, or placebo groups and hypersensitivity was assessed using VRS and VAS scores at baseline, 15 minutes, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months. Both active treatments significantly reduced hypersensitivity compared with placebo, but iontophoresis showed greater improvement, with VRS decreasing from 2.23±0.46 to 0.33±0.47 and VAS from 6.80±2.29 to 0.68±1.11 at 3 months. Thus, iontophoresis using stannous fluoride gel provided superior and sustained desensitization compared with diode laser therapy, with no adverse events reported.
