Abstract |
Hemoglobinopathies pose a major diagnostic burden in India, where β-thalassemia trait affects 3–15% of the population regionally and most carriers go undetected until symptomatic. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the 608 clinically suspected patients at Sharda Hospital, Greater Noida over 44 months using complete blood count, peripheral smear and HPLC (Bio-Rad Variant II). Abnormal hemoglobin patterns were found in 48 patients (7.89%), most commonly β-thalassemia trait (50%), followed by raised HbF and sickle cell trait (10.4% each), HbD-Punjab trait (6.2%) and rare compound heterozygous variants. MCV below 82 fL and MCH below 27 pg identified 87.5% and 95.8% of β-thalassemia trait cases respectively, while HPLC alone resolved compound heterozygous states missed by electrophoresis and solubility testing. Thus, HPLC combined with red cell indices strengthens carrier detection and supports targeted antenatal and premarital referral where nutritional anemia may confound interpretation. |
