Abstract

Caregiver burden among family members caring for the geriatric population remains an important public health concern, particularly in rapidly urbanizing communities where caregiving demands continue to increase. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 caregivers of elderly individuals residing in urban Karnataka using a structured questionnaire and the Novak and Caregiver Burden Inventory to assess caregiver factors. Most caregivers were females (90%) and young adults (48%), while 67% had low overall caregiver burden (score <20). Caregiver burden was significantly associated with behavioural problems, memory loss, longer caregiving duration and inadequate caregiving knowledge (p<0.05), with behavioural disturbances and insufficient caregiving knowledge contributing most to developmental, physical, social and emotional burden. Thus, data shows the need for caregiver education, psychosocial support and community based interventions to reduce caregiver burden and improve the quality of geriatric care.
