Abstract

White spot lesions remain one of the most common complications during fixed orthodontic treatment because plaque accumulation around brackets promotes enamel demineralization despite routine preventive measures. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the effectiveness of three bracket-area sealants in preventing artificial white spot lesion formation around bonded orthodontic brackets using 120 extracted human premolars randomly allocated to four groups and subjected to a 14-day pH-cycling model. The control group showed the greatest lesion depth (112.6 ± 18.9 µm), whereas fluoride-releasing resin sealant (64.8 ± 12.7 µm), filled resin sealant (72.5 ± 14.1 µm) and glass-ionomer sealant (81.9 ± 15.6 µm) showed significantly lower lesion depths (p<0.001). Surface microhardness loss and visual demineralization scores were significantly reduced in all sealant groups, with the filled resin sealant exhibiting the highest sealant retention (86.7%). Thus, data shows that bracket-area sealants effectively reduced artificial white spot lesion formation, with the fluoride-releasing resin sealant providing the greatest overall preventive benefit under the conditions of this in vitro study.
