Abstract

Drug stock-outs in tertiary care hospitals interrupt pharmacotherapy, yet inventory analyses rarely link drug categories to supply failure. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate 564 drug formulations of a 1000-bed tertiary care hospital using an integrated ABC-VED-FSN matrix. Procurement and consumption records from April 2024 to March 2025 were analysed retrospectively for stock-out events and therapeutic substitution. Annual expenditure was ₹9.90 crore, Category A consumed 69.98% of spend from 9.21% of items and 62.1% of 264 stock-outs fell in AVF, AEF and BVF drugs, 61% with substitution. Thus, data shows that integrated ABC-VED-FSN matrix identifies predictable, preventable stock-outs and guides procurement to protect uninterrupted pharmacotherapy.
