Abstract

The predictive ability of CBCT - derived morphometric and volumetric parameters of the mastoid process for gender determination was evaluated in North Indian population. A total of 68 CBCT scans (136 Mastoid Processes) of both sexes aged 18–60 years were retrospectively analyzed and mastoid length, height, width and volume were evaluated bilaterally using customized software, followed by discriminant function analysis. Males exhibited significantly (P ˂ 0.001) greater mastoid length, height and volume than females. Volumetric analysis achieved >94 % classification accuracy. Thus, mastoid volume and height appear to be the most informative CBCT derived parameters for forensic gender determination.
