Abstract |
Infected non-union of tibial fractures, particularly following open injuries, remains challenging and the Ilizarov technique permits simultaneous infection control and bone reconstruction. In this prospective study of 32 patients followed for 9 months, treatment outcomes were assessed using the Association for the Study and Application of Methods of Ilizarov (ASAMI) criteria. Radiological outcomes were excellent or good in 87.7% of patients, while functional outcomes were excellent or good in 81.3%; complications occurred in 56.2%, with joint stiffness, pain, limb-length discrepancy and reinfection being the most frequent. Severe open fractures, positive cultures and the need for additional procedures were significantly associated with complications. The Ilizarov ring fixator therefore provides an effective limb-reconstruction strategy for infected tibial non-union, although complication rates remain substantial and may adversely affect functional recovery. |
