Abstract

Accurate assessment of the relationship between posterior mandibular root apices and the mandibular canal is essential to minimize inferior alveolar nerve injury during dental procedures. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate root apex–mandibular canal distances in 400 patients from the Chhattisgarh population. Distances from the second premolars and first and second molars to the mandibular canal were measured using CBCT and analyzed by age and gender. The distal root of the first molar was farthest from the canal, whereas the distal root of the second molar was the closest; distances increased significantly with age but showed no gender differences. Thus, CBCT provides accurate three-dimensional assessment this should be considered before endodontic, surgical and implant procedures to reduce the risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury.
