Abstract

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) alters haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) independently of glucose, distorting glycaemic assessments in non diabetics. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the HbA1c levels and haematological parameters among 50 non-diabetic patients with IDA and 50 non-IDA subjects. The IDA group showed significantly lower haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), serum iron, and ferritin (p<0.001). A substantial negative correlation linked HbA1c to these iron parameters, indicating that worsening IDA increases HbA1c. Clinicians must account for IDA during HbA1c interpretation to prevent the misdiagnosis of prediabetes or diabetes.
