Abstract

It remains unknown whether restoring endodontically treated mandibular first premolars with dentin posts provides superior fracture resistance and more favorable failure modes compared to glass fiber posts. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the fracture resistance and mode of fracture of 24 endodontically treated teeth (ETT), human mandibular first premolars restored with CAD-CAM fabricated dentin posts or prefabricated glass fibre posts using universal testing and stereomicroscopic analysis. There was statistical indifference between the two groups in fracture strength (p = 1.000). The most frequent mode of failure in both groups was the failure of the luting cement, followed by adhesive failure at the dentin-cement interfaces and no catastrophic post or root fractures were noted. Thus, dentin posts and glass fibre posts showed similar biomechanical performance and are clinically acceptable for the rehabilitation of ETT.
