Abstract

Epidural adjuvants improve block quality and prolong post-operative analgesia in lower limb surgery. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the epidural levobupivacaine with fentanyl or dexmedetomidine in 84 ASA I–II patients. Sensory and motor block onset, haemodynamics, analgesia duration and complications were evaluated. Dexmedetomidine produced faster block onset and longer analgesia than fentanyl (p < 0.0001), with comparable haemodynamics. Thus, dexmedetomidine is a superior epidural adjuvant to levobupivacaine for lower limb surgery, providing faster block onset and prolonged analgesia.
